Franziskanerkloster Weimar

The Franciscan Monastery in Weimar, a historic complex in the Thuringian city, was founded in the 15th century and experienced a relatively brief period of prosperity before its closure during the Reformation. The preserved building sections still bear witness to its former significance today.
History+
The foundation of the Franciscan Monastery in Weimar was established in 1453 by Duke Wilhelm III, known as the Brave, inspired by the Franciscan Johannes Capistranus. After four years of construction, a convent of the Saxon Franciscan Province moved into the new premises in 1457. Duke Wilhelm III was buried in the crypt beneath the monastery church in 1482. It is said that the Duke himself wore a monk's habit in the last years of his life. The reformer Martin Luther stayed at this monastery on several occasions, commemorated by a small plaque documenting his visits between 1518 and 1540. In 1533, the monastery was closed as a result of the Reformation. From 1548, the monastery church and the monks' dormitory were used as a granary. Today, only the area of the monastery church remains, while the former arsenal, built in 1753 on the dormitory wing, only exists in remnants.
