The monastery of Gemen was founded in 1720. It was placed under the patronage of Maria Immaculata and served as a significant center for the Franciscan Observant order in the region. For many decades, the monks shaped the spiritual and cultural life in Gemen until the monastery was dissolved in 1811 during the secularization.
