Heilig-Kreuz-Kloster

Parish church, rectory, primary school

The former Franciscan Observant Monastery of Heilig Kreuz in Kempten, Bavaria, is a significant architectural monument and the historical heart of the district of the same name. It emerged in connection with a pilgrimage and includes a structurally integrated parish and pilgrimage church, which remains a focal point to this day.

History+

The founding of Heilig Kreuz Monastery is closely linked to a legend concerning a miracle of blood said to have occurred in 1691, when red water fountains spouted from a meadow. This phenomenon was associated with the five wounds of Christ and attracted pilgrims seeking protection from illnesses and crop failures. Initially, a small wooden chapel was built in 1694, replaced by a stone structure in 1711. In 1715, the official founding of the Franciscan Observant Monastery took place, with its monks taking over the care of the pilgrimage. A hospice was started in 1716 and occupied in 1717. From 1738, the monastery attained the status of a convent. It experienced a flourishing period in the 18th century with tens of thousands of communicants annually and received valuable relics. In 1786, the church was consecrated. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1805, and its assets were auctioned off. From 1807 to 1829, it served as a dying-out monastery for Augustinians. Later, it became an expositure and was elevated to a parish in 1948. The pilgrimage church now serves as a parish church, while the former monastery buildings house the rectory and an elementary school.
