Michaeliskloster

The Brothers of the Common Life, also known as Fraterherren, settled in Rostock in 1462 and began constructing their monastery around 1480. The building combined living and working areas with a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael. From 1475, the brothers established the first printing press in Rostock, considered the oldest in Mecklenburg and the second oldest in Northern Germany. Johann Snell, among others, learned his trade here. The printing press ceased operations in 1531 after Duke Heinrich V, at the insistence of Martin Luther, prohibited the printing of a New Testament edition. Following the dissolution of the Fraterhaus during the Reformation in August 1534, the building was used for various purposes, including a student dormitory, armory, wool warehouse, and grain storage.

Fraterherren St. Michael is located in the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 23 meters above sea level.

The building, which was completely burned out in a bombing raid in April 1942, has been partially rebuilt. Since the 1950s, the eastern part has housed a community center for the Evangelical Methodist Church. The west wing was restored in 1994 and is now used by the University Library Rostock for its special collections and the theology and philosophy departmental library.
