Kloster Wolf

Ruins, freely accessible

The former Fraterherrenkloster Wolf, situated in the picturesque landscape of Traben-Trarbach in Rhineland-Palatinate, is a historical cultural monument. The complex, which once served as a place of activity for the Brothers of the Common Life, is dedicated to Mary and bears witness to a rich past along the Moselle.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to 1478, when the Brothers of the Common Life, also known as Fraterherren, established a settlement on the Göckelsberg. This foundation was initiated by the joint rulers of the Hintere Grafschaft Sponheim, Friedrich I of Pfalz-Simmern and Margrave Christoph I of Baden, who called Fraterherren from Butzbach to Wolf. The already existing Liebfrauenkirche, one of the oldest Marian churches in the Moselle region, was integrated into the monastic complex. In the course of the Reformation in the Hintere Grafschaft Sponheim, the monastery was dissolved between 1560 and 1569. The monastery's income and assets subsequently benefited the schools and churches of the county.

Location+

The Wolf Monastery is located southwest of the present-day district of Wolf in Traben-Trarbach, in the Bernkastel-Wittlich district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is situated on the Göckelsberg at an altitude of approximately 230 meters above sea level, overlooking the Moselle.

On site+

Only a few traces of the once extensive monastic complex remain today. These include the ruin of the Romanesque west tower of the former Liebfrauenkirche from the 12th century and parts of the three-aisled nave and choir, which mainly date from the 15th century. The remains are protected as a cultural monument.
