Frauenkirche

The history of the Frauenkirche dates back a long way, with conjectures about a wooden mission church around the year 1000. In the 12th century, a Romanesque church was built on the same site, which was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 14th century and extended with a late Gothic choir in the 15th century. After the Reformation, it became a Lutheran parish church. As the medieval building became dilapidated and too small in the early 18th century, the Dresden city council decided in 1722 to construct a new church. George Bähr designed the Baroque church, whose foundation stone was laid in 1726. The construction, financed by donations, lasted until 1743. Bähr's original plan for a wooden dome was changed in favor of a stone dome, which was contractually agreed upon in 1733 and completed with a dome cross in 1743. The church was an important building until 1945, but repeatedly suffered from structural problems, especially cracks in the dome and damage to the interior pillars, which were remedied by renovations such as steel-reinforced concrete rings in 1938. During World War II, the Frauenkirche was severely damaged during the air raids on Dresden in February 1945 and collapsed on February 15, 1945. Its ruins served as a memorial in the GDR. After reunification, reconstruction began in 1994 and was completed in 2005, transforming the church into a symbol of reconciliation.

The Frauenkirche is located in Dresden's Old Town, within the city area of Dresden, in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. It stands at an elevation of approximately 125 meters above sea level.

Today, the Frauenkirche is accessible to visitors and can be toured.
