Mundelsheim Manor

The so-called Schlössle is the manor house of the Freihof on the eastern edge of Mundelsheim. The town was long a Baden fief of the Lords of Urbach. Their knight's castle, with a deep moat and defensive towers, was destroyed in 1440 by an army of the imperial cities; in 1521 the fief reverted to the Margraves of Baden. The castle then served as the seat of the bailiffs. In 1595/96 Duke Friedrich of Württemberg bought the town. The old castle buildings were demolished in 1753; cellars and walls about 1.4 meters thick with bricked-up loopholes remained as a barn.
The Freihof was built between 1586 and 1592 on the castle grounds. In 1591, the last Baden bailiff Johann Wolff von Bergzabern received the property from the Margrave. The estate was tax-free, hence the name, and remained walled until the 19th century. It comprised the later Schlössle, today's Gasthaus Krone and the Nebenschlössle with stables and dairy. Wolff used it until his death in 1600 (epitaph in the Kilianskirche).
The Schlössle is a two-story plastered building with a gabled roof and a western gabled dormer on a high cellar plinth. At its core from the late 16th century: solid ground floor, chamfered window frames, high round-arched gate. In the second quarter of the 19th century, a classical renovation followed with a gabled dormer, outdoor staircase and rectangular portal. In the 19th century, the Schlossbrauerei Mundelsheim, one of the larger private breweries in Württemberg, was located here; it was dissolved in 1902.
