Freihof von Ruckershausen

Vom Freihof zum Fachwerkbau

On the southwestern outer bailey grounds of the upper town, sources record a stately manor (Freihof) as a predecessor building, which belonged to Hellwig von Ruckershausen in 1570, then to Heinrich Schezelin, and finally to the Sahlfeldt family. It was destroyed in 1693. The cellar vaults and remaining walls of the predecessor were integrated into the half-timbered building, which still stands today and dates from 1721, probably for the March and War Commissioner Johann Peter Esswein, who held the function of a Zentgraf or cellar master.
