Freising Cathedral

The church can be visited

Freising Cathedral, also known as St. Mary's Cathedral, is a cathedral in Freising, Bavaria. Once the episcopal see of the Diocese of Freising, it now functions as a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and is a central location for priestly ordinations.

History+

The origins of the cathedral date back to the 8th century, when an initial St. Mary's Church stood on the cathedral hill around 715, which Boniface elevated to a bishop's church in 739. Around 860, a new three-aisled cathedral was built, renovated after a fire in 903. The current Romanesque building with a double-tower facade was begun in 1159 and consecrated in 1205, after a fire destroyed the previous structure.
