Weinberg Manor

The Freisitz Weinberg is located in the Traundorf district of the city of Gmunden in the Gmunden district of Upper Austria (Georgstraße 28).

Traundorf belonged to the Lordship of Ort. Traundorf is first mentioned in documents in 1340. For decades, there were tensions between Traundorf and Gmunden, as the people of Traundorf disregarded the privileges of the city of Gmunden. These could only be resolved when Traundorf was incorporated into the Burgfrieden of Gmunden for the first time in 1603 and definitively in 1637. The Freisitz Weinberg was also originally not subject to urban jurisdiction and was exempt from all taxes.

The first mention of Weinberg as a noble Freisitz was in 1642. At that time, Johann Georg Wankhammer, who also owned the neighboring Freisitz Moos, sold the Freisitz to the owner of Schloss Mühlgrub, Johann Baptist Fasolt. From him, Weinberg came to his stepson Hans Adam von Kaschnitz, in whose family the Freisitz remained until 1784. Hans Adam and all his descendants appear from then on as Kaschnitz zum (von) Weinberg. The Kaschnitz themselves are a noble family documented in Gmunden since the 16th century, who had proven particularly loyal during the peasant uprisings. In 1564, the noble Lord Kaschnitz, also called Khaschnitz and Käsnitz, was appointed to princely services in the toll and salt administration, and the Kaschnitz are a council family of the city of Gmunden.

Weinberg has since seen many owners, including Count Schmidegg. In 1931, Duke Ernst August of Cumberland acquired it.

The building has a villa-like character; more recent additions are present. From Georgstraße, dense vegetation prevents a direct view of the building. It is privately owned and cannot be visited. The name of the Freisitz commemorates the vineyards that were formerly present here.
