Freusburg Castle, an early medieval hilltop castle, rises on a hilltop above the Sieg Valley in Rhineland-Pfalz. It is one of Germany's most popular youth hostels.

History+

The first mention of Freusburg, then known as Fruodeesbraderofanc, dates back to 913. A documented entry followed in 1048, while the construction of the castle is estimated to be around 1100. The castle received its current name for the first time in 1247 in the context of an inheritance division. Around 1580, Count Heinrich IV of Sayn undertook renovations.
