Friesenhäuser Castle
The elongated Friesenhäuser Castle in Giebelstadt, Lower Franconia, in the district of Würzburg, is located directly on the main street of the village.
Friesenhäuser Castle, a single-winged, elegant Baroque building, is named after its builders from the "Friesenhäuser line" of the Zobel family. The construction of the castle was most likely begun in 1687 by Hans Heinrich Zobel von Giebelstadt zu Friesenhausen and completed around 1700 by his son Johann Gottlob Zobel and his wife Maria Sophia von Berlichingen. Friesenhäuser Castle served as a noble residence for only a short time. From 1814 to 1916, a brewery was housed here, in 1874 a restaurant, in 1922 apartments and temporarily also the offices of the police and post office.
Architecture+
The east facade of the two-story magnificent building with its imposing gable roof and hips is adorned with a prominent central portal with a broken round arch gable, which points to its builders with the Zobel and Berlichingen coats of arms.
Current Use+
In 1979, the municipality of Giebelstadt acquired Friesenhäuser Castle, thoroughly renovated the building, and converted it into the town hall. Since 1984, the municipal administration of Giebelstadt, the administrative community of Giebelstadt, and the Giebelstadt branch of Raiffeisenbank Ochsenfurt eG have been using the building on the market square. The municipal archive has been housed in the attic of Friesenhäuser Castle since 2006.
Vaulted Cellar+
Since the mid-1990s, the Giebelstadt Cultural Association with the "Kartoffelkeller" (Potato Cellar) has been housed in the vaulted cellar of the Zobel tithe barn behind the castle.
