Frijsenborg Slot (Castle)

The county of Frijsenborg was founded in 1672 by Mogens Friis of Favrskov. The original village of Jernit had already been incorporated into an estate between 1583 and 1586 and was acquired by Mogens Friis in 1665. Over the following centuries, the county acquired numerous other farms and the formerly independent estates of Söbygård and Lyngballegård. The current imposing castle was built between 1862 and 1867 on the foundations of a demolished Baroque complex. It was constructed in the Dutch Renaissance style and reflects an approximation of the opulent 19th-century style. Unlike many other estates, Frijsenborg experienced an economic boom in the second half of the 19th century, which allowed for investments in buildings, gardens, and art. In 1922, with the dissolution of fiefs in Denmark, Frijsenborg was the largest estate in Denmark, comprising approximately 3,720 hectares of arable land and 7,220 hectares of forest.

Frijsenborg Castle is located in Hammel, in the Favrskov district of the Midtjylland region, Denmark. It stands at an elevation of approximately 89 meters above sea level.

Today, Frijsenborg Castle remains in private ownership and is a living testament to its long history. The estate includes an extensive English garden with sprawling lawns, groups of trees, and shrubs. In the lower areas, small lakes with ornamental fish and rush plants can be found. Characteristic elements of the garden include a garden house, a burial mound, and a temple ruin.
