Fürstenberger Castle

The current appearance of Fürstenberg Castle was created between 1671 and 1681 under Landgrave Maximilian Franz von Fürstenberg-Stühlingen. The new construction incorporated elements of a smaller predecessor building from the time of Count Heinrich VI von Fürstenberg, which had been severely damaged and rendered uninhabitable during the Thirty Years' War. Maximilian Franz commissioned stonemason Hans Georg Brachet and carpenter Hans Jakob Glöckler for the expansion. The south wing was extended, the Gothic castle chapel was reoriented and integrated, and the Hunger Tower of the town's fortifications was incorporated into the south wing. The west, east, and north wings of the current castle were also newly built. The construction was part of Maximilian Franz's efforts to achieve the status of Imperial Prince, which he did not succeed in during his lifetime.
