In Weimar stands the Fürstenhaus, a former residence, that now houses the Franz Liszt University of Music. Originally intended as a financial authority, it was repurposed as a ducal residence after a fire at Weimar City Palace and has since shaped the cityscape.

History+

The foundation stone for the Fürstenhaus was laid on May 3, 1770, with construction led by architect Anton Georg Hauptmann following plans by Johann Gottfried Schlegel, completed by 1774. Initially, the building was intended for the Princely Landscape Treasury. After the Wilhelmsburg, the Weimar City Palace, burned down in 1774, Duke Carl August moved into the still unfinished structure, which was then named Fürstenhaus.
