Berchtesgaden Provostry

The monastery of Berchtesgaden was founded in 1102. Initially conceived as an Augustinian Canons Regular collegiate church, the provosts gained a dual function as spiritual and temporal rulers as early as 1194. In 1380, the collegiate church was elevated to an Imperial Prelacy, which secured the provosts a seat and vote in the Imperial Diet. The final transformation into the Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden occurred in 1559, establishing the territory as an independent principality until 1803. The residence of the collegiate and prince-provosts was located in the original monastery building in Berchtesgaden, which was expanded over the centuries. The economic foundation of the principality was primarily salt and metal extraction, which, despite low yields from agriculture and livestock farming, ensured prosperity and employment. The production of wooden toys, known as Berchtesgadener War, also contributed to income from the late 15th century. However, the independence of the collegiate church was repeatedly challenged by the Arch-diocese of Salzburg, leading to political conflicts and armed disputes.

The former Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden is situated in the Berchtesgadener Land in Bavaria, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 577 meters above sea level.

The former monastery buildings of the Prince-Provostry of Berchtesgaden now serve as a castle and are a central attraction in the region. They bear witness to the long history and former significance of this spiritual and temporal center.
