Nordendorf Castle

Fugger Castle Nordendorf is the remnant of a formerly much more extensive castle complex belonging to the Fugger family. The two-story building with a gabled roof is located in the middle of the village of Nordendorf in the district of Augsburg.

Around 1520, the brothers Hans Leonhard and Anton Bimmel from Augsburg acquired the Bavarian fiefdom of Nordendorf, in addition to Meitingen. Through marriage, Nordendorf came into the possession of the Augsburg patrician family Rehlinger in 1580. Anton von Rehlinger had the main castle built in 1560, consisting of a tower-like manor house, possibly with corner turrets or oriels, and a steep gabled roof with wavy or stepped gables. Its west side leaned against an outbuilding and the tower-like elevated chapel; to the south was the rectangular farmyard. In 1580, the Fugger family acquired the castle and estate of Nordendorf for 30,000 guilders, which from then on was the center of power for the Fugger secondary line Fugger-Nordendorf. The Fugger-Nordendorf family remained resident in the village until 1878. In 1862 (according to other sources 1864), the imposing main castle burned down. Immediately after the devastating fire, most of the remains were removed, and the surviving outbuildings were sold in 1865 according to a seniorate resolution of the Fugger family. Subsequent owners included the comital family Fischler-Treuberg.

Today, only parts of the west (tower with chapel) and south wings (gatehouse) remain. In 1979–1980 and 1994–1995, significant renovation works were carried out, which heavily altered the interiors. In the castle park, there is a Renaissance fountain with the alliance coat of arms of Fugger-Rechberg. Above the south portal, an alliance coat of arms of Fugger-Welser is affixed. The current castle is divided private property and not accessible to the public.
