Gamburg Castle

The origins of Gamburg Castle date back to the mid-12th century when it was built by the Archbishops of Mainz. Its first documented mention as “castrum Gamburc” dates to 1157. At that time, Archbishop Arnold von Selenhofen granted the castle as a fief to the noble free lord Beringer von Gamburg, who in return ceded the “villula Brunnenbach.” In 1546, the castle changed hands through an exchange with the Archbishop of Mainz, becoming the property of Eberhard Rüdt von Collenberg. Gamburg Castle saw a series of ownership changes, including the families of Hattstein, Brendel von Homburg, von Kronberg, von Dalberg, and von Ingelheim. In 1936, Count Emanuel von Westerholt-Gysenberg acquired the complex.
