Gemmingensches Castle

The castle's origins date back to the 16th century when it was built by the Gemmingen family. This family had owned shares in Widdern since Konrad von Gemmingen (died 1463). For the construction of the half-timbered building, which features a massive base and a round stair tower and is dated 1574 above a cellar door, ashlar stones from the Ganerbenburg, destroyed in 1458, were used. In 1584, the Gemmingen bailiff's office was built in the immediate vicinity. The Bürg-Presteneck line of the Barons of Gemmingen, who owned the castle, died out in the male line in 1841. The property passed to Sigmund von Gemmingen-Hornberg zu Treschklingen and his sons, who, however, soon sold it.
