Gersdorfer Castle

Gersdorfer Burg is a district of Quedlinburg, located two kilometers south in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt. Gersdorfer Burg is a medieval village complex that fell into disuse as early as the 13th century, a castle complex whose foundation dates back to the first half of the 12th century, and more recent farm buildings that have been used as an agricultural enterprise since 1756.

The villa Gerwigesthorp, located east of Quedlinburg below the Seweckenberge, was bequeathed to the Quedlinburg Abbey in 961; it fell into disuse as early as the 1260s. Of the medieval castle complex, which was built in the 12th century, only a keep remains today. The castle was temporarily owned by the Counts of Regenstein and was destroyed in 1337. In 1369, a first reconstruction took place, and in 1756, the extensive castle grounds were transformed into an outwork. Long residential buildings, parts of the enclosure, and more recent farm buildings have been preserved from this period. In 1840, the Quedlinburg seed breeding company Heinr. Mette leased Gersdorfer Burg. Later, the company also acquired ownership.
