Gohlis Castle

The palace was built in 1755 and 1756 at the behest of the Leipzig councilor Johann Caspar Richter. Construction took place on a plot of land created by merging two adjacent farmsteads belonging to his wife, Christiana Regina Richter. It is presumed that the design came from Friedrich Seltendorff, influenced by Johann Christoph Knöffel. The interior work was delayed due to Richter's high contribution payments during the Seven Years' War. After Richter's death in 1770, Johann Gottlob Böhme, the widow's new husband, completed the interior, with Adam Friedrich Oeser creating the paintings in the ballroom. During this period, the palace hosted figures like Friedrich Schiller. In 1793, the property was bequeathed to the city of Leipzig. During the Battle of Leipzig, it served as quarters for military officers and later as a military hospital.
