The Gozzoburg in Krems an der Donau is a high medieval town castle and an example of early Gothic architecture in Lower Austria. Its origins date back to the period after 1235, when a late Romanesque building formed its core.

History+

After the Krems city judge Gozzo von Krems acquired the original building in the late 1240s, he had it expanded into a palace complex in three construction phases. The first documented mention of its name occurred in 1258, followed by the consecration of the Katharinenkapelle (St. Catherine's Chapel) in 1267. From 1320, the castle became part of the Habsburg possessions and was frequently mortgaged in the 15th century. During a siege by Matthias Corvinus in 1477, the castle was damaged, leading to its reconstruction between 1484 and 1487.
