In Lauffen am Neckar, an island castle rises on a Neckar island. Originally built in the early 11th century, it now serves as the town hall and is the only one of its kind on the Neckar River.

History+

The construction of the Grafenburg took place between the late 10th and early 11th centuries by the Counts of Lauffen, who originated from the Popponen lineage. Its first documented mention dates back to 1067. The original Salian-era complex included a residential tower with outbuildings, which was supplemented by a keep in the 12th century. After the extinction of the Counts of Lauffen around 1218/19, the Staufer pledged the castle to the Margraves of Baden.
