Border Museum Schifflersgrund

The Border Museum Schifflersgrund was one of the first of its kind in the reunited Federal Republic, aiming to preserve some historically significant fragments of the former inner-German border and make them accessible to posterity.

The current Border Museum Schifflersgrund is located on the former inner-German border between Hesse and Thuringia. It lies on a piece of land that was assigned to the former Soviet Occupation Zone (later GDR) in 1945 as part of the Wanfried Agreement. Therefore, the site of the documentation center is today part of the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld, but historically, the area belongs neither to Thuringia nor to the historical region of Eichsfeld, but to Hesse. The museum is housed in various buildings, some of which served as border buildings on the GDR side in the region.

The museum was opened on October 3, 1991, and has been under the patronage of the "Arbeitskreis Grenzinformation e.V." (Association for Border Information, registered association) (headquarters: Bad Sooden-Allendorf) since its inception.
