Grevenburg Castle
Grevenburg is located one kilometer northeast of the Sommersell district of the city of Nieheim in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Grevenburg is a moated castle (palace or manor house); the estate grounds around the building cover 2.5 hectares and are now a historic landscape park. The noble family Oeynhausen acquired the land and built an outwork there in 1536. The castle was named after the Greve stream. The descendants built the small Renaissance manor house as their family seat between 1566 and 1579. Originally, Grevenburg was surrounded by a moat approximately 18 m wide, which was enclosed by a high and thick ring wall. Around 1850, the moat was partially filled in and ponds were created. Around 1950, the park was redesigned again. The park is characterized by old trees.
Family Ownership+
The family branch henceforth called itself Oeynhausen-Grevenburg. In 1592, the family also came into possession of the Oldenburg in what is now the city area of Marienmünster. Arnd von Oeynhausen, lord of Grevenburg, was captain and commander in Giessen in 1650. Karl von Oeynhausen (1795-1865), Prussian chief mining officer, was born at Grevenburg. Bad Oeynhausen is named after him. During the Third Reich, Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Hitler were visitors to Grevenburg. Its then owner, Adolf von Oeynhausen, was appointed district president of the Minden administrative district from 1933 to 1943 at the personal instigation of Adolf Hitler. Grevenburg is still in private ownership today.
