Grosnez Castle
Grosnez Castle is a fascinating 14th-century castle ruin, rising on the northwestern tip of the Channel Island of Jersey. Its name, derived from the Old Norse “grar ness,” aptly describes the “grey headland” on which it stands. This historic site offers a unique glimpse into the medieval defensive architecture of the region.
History+
The construction of Grosnez Castle took place around 1330 under the direction of Sir John des Roches. Strategically located on a cliff, the castle was naturally protected on three sides by the topography. The fourth side was secured by a ditch cut into the rock. The walls, made of local granite and reinforced by semi-circular bastions, enclosed the complex. Despite its robust construction, the castle had weaknesses, including the lack of an internal water supply and sally ports for counterattacks. French troops captured the castle in 1373 and again in 1381. It is believed that Grosnez Castle was finally destroyed during the French occupation of Jersey between 1461 and 1468, as the Seigneur of St. Ouen was granted permission to fortify his manor house in 1483, which would have been unlikely if the castle were intact.
