Großes Palais Meiningen

Construction of the Great Palace began in 1821 and was completed two years later, in 1823, under the direction of architect Johann Andreas Schaubach in the Neoclassical style. It initially served as a dower palace for Duchess Luise Eleonore. A redesign and expansion took place in 1863 by Senior Building Councillor Otto Hoppe, giving the palace its current Neo-Renaissance facade. After his abdication in 1866, it became the residence of Duke Bernhard II. From 1890, Hereditary Prince and later Duke Bernhard III resided in the palace.
