Palais Gunzoburg

The Gunzoburg is a medieval patrician house in the Baden-Württemberg city of Überlingen on Lake Constance. An inscription at the house entrance states that this house was supposedly the residence of Duke Gunzo, Duke of Swabia and Alamannia, in the year 641.

"In this castle, Gunzo, Duke of Swabia and Alamannia, resided in the year 641." However, the following points argue against this claim:

1. The house is not a castle, but merely a better patrician house, rather unsuitable as a ruler's seat.
2. The house does not date from the 7th century, as the inscription suggests, but at the earliest from the 13th or 14th century.
3. In the seventh century, the city of Überlingen did not yet exist; it was first mentioned in the 8th century.
4. Independent Dukes of Alamannia no longer existed since the 6th century, and Dukes of Swabia at the earliest again since the 9th century, so the title is ambiguous.
5. Even among the Dukes of the 7th century (who were dependent on the crumbling Frankish central power), Gunzo cannot be clearly identified.
