Altfresenburg Manor

The origins of Fresenburg trace back to the 8th century, when a Slavic castle existed on this site. The first documented mention of the property as a noble estate occurred in 1263. This estate included the Alt- and Neufresenburg farms, as well as Poggensee and Schadehorn, and the villages of Poggensee and Seefeld. In 1544, the then estate owner Bartholomäus von Ahlefeld settled Mennonite refugees in Schadehorn, who were fleeing religious persecution; among them, Menno Simons also found refuge here. The estate passed into the possession of the von Buchwaldt family in 1710.
