Altwigshagen Manor

The first documented mention of Altwigshagen dates back to 1295. As early as the 14th century, a lowland castle existed here, which was a feudal possession of the von Schwerin family and served as one of their ancestral seats alongside Spantekow. The castle was mentioned in 1326 and 1331 as “castrum Oldeshagen.” Following various feuds between the Schwerins of Altwigshagen and Spantekow with the city of Anklam in the 14th and 15th centuries, the situation calmed down towards the end of the 15th century, after which the castle fell into disrepair. In the 17th century, Altwigshagen passed to the von Borcke family. A final tower of the original Schwerin castle was demolished in 1866. In the same year, Hugo von Borcke began construction of the current manor house in the Tudor Gothic style. After World War II, in 1945, the owners were dispossessed.
