Barkow Manor

The current Gutshaus Barkow was constructed in 1913. It replaced an older predecessor building from the 18th century, which was a half-timbered structure. The builders of the new edifice were members of the Hülße family, who commissioned architect Schmuck from Hamburg for the design. The estate itself was originally a state-owned domain, leased out in hereditary tenure in the 1860s. In 1874, the estate passed into the possession of the Bethge family, before later going to the Hülße family. After World War II, in 1945, the Hülße family was dispossessed and expelled as part of land reform. The manor house subsequently served as refugee accommodation. Although it was on a list of buildings slated for demolition, it was used as a school from 1949, thanks to the initiative of the villagers.
