The origins of Gut Basthorst date back to 1278, with the name indicating a clearing site. The verifiable history of the noble estate begins in 1391 with the mention of the knight Johan Schacken. The Schack family shaped the development of the property, which was once a fortified castle, for centuries. During the Thirty Years' War, around 1640, the estate was fortified with bastions and a moat by Duke Franz Albrecht, the younger brother of the Duke of Lauenburg.
