Böhlendorf Manor

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1298 as Villa Bole-Dorpe. The estate was owned by the families von Kardorff (1444–1650 and 1792–1945) and von der Lühe (until 1789). The manor house dates from after 1648 and changed its form due to renovations. With Karl von Kardorff (1756–1820), married to Hedwig von der Lühe, a constant genealogical tradition of the von Kardorff family at Böhlendorf, titled "Das Haus Böhlendorf", was solidified. The noble family then secured the property by forming a family fideicommiss. The first fideicommissary lord was Friedrich Ernst von Kardorff-Böhlendorf, allied with Helene Freiin von Nauendorf. In 1928, according to the last published Mecklenburg estate address book, the allodial estate of Böhlendorf comprised 1067 ha. Intensive livestock farming was carried out and partly modern technology was used. 290 ha of forest are designated as part of the estate. A Mr. von Seek acted as tenant. Her son Wilhelm Ernst Heinrich von Kardorff (1877–1945) was then the last landowner; he died with his wife Mary von Bülow at the beginning of May 1945 and was buried with her near the manor house. The son and later flight captain Manfred von Kardorff was previously designated as heir. He lived in Hamburg with his second wife after the war. After 1945, the former manor house served as a kindergarten, school, and office of the state-owned estate, among other things. In 1973, the internationally recognized Institute for Potato Breeding was established in Böhlendorf.
