The history of the building dates back to the 14th century. Originally built as a fortified manor, it served as the residence for various noble families over the centuries. Each owner left their mark, transforming the building's architecture and interior design. From the Gothic foundations to the Renaissance additions and Baroque embellishments, the building is a testament to the changing styles and tastes of different eras.
The Schellhass Family and the 20th Century
In 1914, the estate was owned by Theodor Ernst Schellhass, who was dispossessed and expelled by the Communists in 1945.
Architectural Features and Special Characteristics+
The building is a fascinating example of architectural evolution. The oldest parts, dating back to the the 14th century, still show elements of medieval fortress architecture, such as thick walls and small windows. Later additions from the Renaissance period brought larger windows, more ornate facades, and spacious halls. The Baroque era added decorative stucco work, frescoes, and a grand staircase, which is still one of the building's most impressive features today.
The Chapel
A particular highlight is the chapel, consecrated in 1650, with its impressive ceiling paintings and a valuable altar from the 17th century. The chapel served as a private place of worship for the noble families and is now open to the public for contemplation and special events.
The Building Today: Museum and Cultural Center+
After extensive restoration work in the late 20th century, the building was transformed into a museum and cultural center. Today, it houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the region and regularly hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and lectures. The historic rooms provide a unique setting for these events, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the past while experiencing contemporary culture.
