Klein Nordsee Manor

The estate (Klein) Nordsee was already mentioned in the Kiel city book in 1300. It got its name from the village of Nordsee on Lake Flemhude, which ceased to exist in 1607. In 1375, it was called Gut zum Achterwehre, presumably originally located under the protection of a medieval defensive structure against the Wends settling east of the Eider, whose name has been preserved in the name of the neighboring village of Achterwehr. The family of the earliest known owners, Swawe, died out when the brothers Heinrich and Marquard Swawe fell in the Battle of Hemmingstedt in 1500. Klein Nordsee came into the possession of the Ahlefeldt family, who also owned estates in the neighboring Westensee. The most famous owner in the 17th century was the Danish Field Marshal Claus von Ahlefeldt. Around 1700, Wulf Jasper von Brockdorff bought Klein Nordsee. As one of his descendants, the last Schleswig-Holstein Chancellor Cay Lorenz Graf von Brockdorff was born on the estate.

The manor house is now a protected monument and is used by the Protestant City Mission Kiel.
