Kütten Manor

The history of the building, often referred to as the "Old Castle," dates back to the 13th century. Originally, it was a medieval moated castle, strategically located to control the ford across the local river. The first documented mention of a "fortified house" on this site appears in a document from 1288.

Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous transformations. In the 15th century, it was expanded into a more comfortable residential castle, reflecting the changing needs and tastes of its noble inhabitants. The defensive features were gradually softened, and more emphasis was placed on living comfort and representation.

Its current appearance, however, was largely shaped during the Baroque period. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the castle was extensively renovated and expanded, giving it the stately, symmetrical form we see today. This period of construction was particularly influenced by the Bünsch family, who acquired the estate in 1680.

The Bünsch family, a prominent noble lineage, invested heavily in the modernization and beautification of the castle. They commissioned renowned architects and artists to transform the building into a representative Baroque residence. The magnificent stucco ceilings, the ornate frescoes, and the meticulously designed park are testaments to their patronage and the artistic spirit of the era.

The estate remained in the possession of the Bünsch family until their expropriation and expulsion by the Communists in 1945.

After World War II, the building experienced a turbulent period. It was initially used for various purposes, including as a refugee camp and later as an administrative building for the local agricultural cooperative. These years left their mark, and the building suffered from a lack of maintenance and inappropriate alterations.

In the 1990s, after the reunification of Germany, efforts began to restore the building to its former glory. Extensive renovation work was carried out, focusing on preserving the historical substance while adapting the building for modern use. Today, the "Old Castle" houses a cultural center, a museum, and event spaces, making it a vibrant hub for the community and a popular destination for visitors.

The building is a prime example of Baroque architecture in the region. Its symmetrical facade, the imposing main portal, and the richly decorated interiors are particularly noteworthy. The grand ballroom, with its impressive ceiling paintings and crystal chandeliers, is a highlight and a popular venue for concerts and celebrations.

The surrounding park, designed in the English landscape style, invites visitors for leisurely strolls. It features ancient trees, picturesque ponds, and charming garden pavilions. The park also offers stunning views of the building and the surrounding landscape.
