Sandbeck Manor

The first documented mention of the Sandbeck locality occurred in 1233 when Bertholdus von Westerbike sold his property to Osterholz Monastery. In 1331, a family named von Sandbeck was mentioned for the first time, whose name evolved from the place name. Berthold and Heino von Sandbeck formed an alliance with the city of Bremen in 1454. In 1499, Barthold von Sandbeck led 700 men into the Battle of Weddewarden. The current manor house, in the Weser Renaissance style, was built in 1575 by Johann von Sandbeck, with Johan Stollink, a master carpenter from Bremen, serving as the architect. The original layout as a moated castle is still discernible today. In 1705, Jürgen Franz von Sandbeck died in office as a Royal Swedish District Administrator. A mill weir and a watermill were constructed in 1773.
