Üselitz Manor

The Üselitz manor house was originally a manor house built in the Renaissance style. The building is currently a ruin and is a protected monument.

The ruin of the manor house is located a few hundred meters northwest of Üselitz, a district of Poseritz in the south of Rügen.

Üselitz was first mentioned in a document in 1314 as Uselitze. Through an exchange, Üselitz passed from the possession of Duke Ernst Ludwig of Pomerania to Erich von Zuhm in 1562. After the Zuhm family ruined themselves with the construction of the hitherto unfinished Renaissance-style manor house, ownership changed hands several times, initially in 1644 as a pledge to the von Ahnen family, already in 1664 as a grace fief to the Putbus family, and before the end of the 17th century to the von Normann family. In 1706, the Stettin councilor and wholesale merchant Friedrich von Langen (1642–1718), who was ennobled in the same year, acquired the estate. His family kept Üselitz until 1939. The last owner before the expropriation in 1945 was Burghard von Veltheim. During the 1950s and 1960s, the building continued to be used as a residential house. In 1970, the roof of the building, which had been vacant ever since, collapsed due to serious damage to the building fabric, and the house fell into disrepair. Currently, the outer and part of the inner walls still exist. The ruin is now in private ownership.

The area around the remains of the former manor house was prepared for flooding from 2006 as part of a renaturation project, as compensation for the construction of the new Rügen Bridge. The resulting Wiek existed in a smaller form until the 1920s and was drained.
