Häme Castle, a rare example of medieval brick Gothic architecture in Finland, stands majestically on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi in Hämeenlinna. Originally situated on an island, it now rises on a steeply sloping moraine hill in the heart of the city, surrounded by expansive green areas.

History+

The origins of Häme Castle date back to the first half of the 13th century, when Swedish crusades under Birger Jarl led to its construction to secure newly acquired territories. First documented in 1308, it was part of a comprehensive building program to strengthen Swedish rule in Finland. From a simple castellum around 1260, the complex evolved through a fieldstone castle (approx. 1270) into an imposing brick castle (approx. 1300-1450), with corner towers added between 1480 and 1520. As the administrative center of the Häme region, the castle was expanded into an artillery fortress under Gustav I Vasa. Its importance diminished when the administration moved to Helsinki in 1634. During the Great Northern War in 1711 and the Russo-Swedish War in 1808, the castle fell to Russian troops without a fight. After the Northern War, it served as the army's granary. From 1837, the castle was converted into a prison, which operated until 1953.
