Hampton Court Palace
Hampton Court Palace, an impressive castle in southwest London on the banks of the Thames, uniquely combines Tudor architecture with English Baroque. Once a favored residence of English and British monarchs, it bears witness to magnificent eras and stands today as an outstanding example of royal architecture.
History+
The origins of the estate date back to 1236, when the Order of St. John operated a manor here. In the 14th century, living quarters were added, serving as an overnight stop for travelers between royal palaces. In 1494, Giles Daubeney leased the estate; as Lord Chamberlain to Henry VII, he often hosted the king and undertook initial expansions. In 1514, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey took over the lease and, over the next seven years, transformed the property into a magnificent Tudor-style country palace. After Wolsey's fall in 1528, Hampton Court passed to Henry VIII, who made it his favorite residence, investing enormous sums in further alterations over ten years. The palace witnessed royal weddings, births, and deaths, including the birth of Edward VI and the death of Jane Seymour. Under James I, the palace became the setting for numerous court events and, in 1604, a synod that led to the King James Bible. Charles I expanded the complex and acquired significant artworks, including Mantegna's “Triumph of Caesar.” During the Civil War, Charles I was imprisoned here before his escape. Under William III and Mary II, a comprehensive Baroque renovation began in 1689, led by Christopher Wren and later William Talman, which shaped the current east and south facades. After 1737, the palace was no longer used as a primary royal residence but offered free accommodation to deserving individuals. Queen Victoria opened the state apartments to the public in 1838, followed by extensive restorations. A fire in 1986 destroyed parts of the royal apartments, which were restored by 1995. Today, Hampton Court is managed by Historic Royal Palaces.
