Achternberg Manor

Haus Achternberg is a former manor house in the Kray district of Essen.

The probably two-part complex came into the possession of the von Arbeck family in 1421. In 1638, ownership passed from them to Johann Sigismund von Arbeck and zum Hardenberge. In the 18th century, the estate belonged to the Barons von Wendt, who were enfeoffed with the estate in 1715. In their estate, there is a record from 1721 stating that Haus Achternberg was in poor condition and ordering its reconstruction. The estate was destroyed by fire in 1905, but the gatehouse of the courtyard entrance with a flat, pyramidal tent roof was preserved. This gatehouse was built in the 15th and 16th centuries in Renaissance style from Ruhr sandstone.

According to the original cadastre from 1821, two building complexes were located south and west of the gatehouse. To the east were larger moats, which are now filled in but are still recognizable by depressions and different vegetation. According to planning documents from 1803 and 1806, the moat systems extended even further in northern and southwestern directions.
