Assen Castle

The origins of Haus Assen date back to the 11th century, when a "Borch to Assen" already existed. This belonged to the Honsel administrative court, which was donated by Emperor Henry II to the Abdinghof Monastery in Paderborn in 1023. In 1384, the castle was granted as a fief to Röttger von Ketteler. A division of the property took place in 1455. In the mid-16th century, specifically 1564, Laurenz von Brachum had Haus Neu-Assen built south of the old castle on behalf of Goswin von Ketteler. Later, the two buildings were connected. At the end of the 16th century, Konrad and Odilia von Ketteler married, reuniting the previously separate possessions. After the extinction of the Assen branch of the family, Heinrich von Galen, supported by his brother Christoph Bernhard von Galen, acquired the estate in 1653.
