Haus Barnsfeld, a former knight's seat and moated castle, is situated in Velen in the Borken district, North Rhine-Westphalia.

History+

The origins of Haus Barnsfeld date back to 1281, when the noble family of Barnsfeld, also known as Bermentfelde, had its ancestral seat here. This family provided castellans for Haus Dülmen Castle of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. In the first half of the 14th century, Count Rainald II of Geldern acquired the lordship of Barnsfeld, which had previously been the family's own property, but continued to enfeoff them with it. During a feud between the Count and the Bishop of Münster from 1322 to 1326, the von Barnsfelds supported Rainald II, which led to the destruction of the castle in 1324. Already in 1323, the estate had passed to Johannis de Doring. His family, the Werences zu Döring, retained possession, which was now a fief of the Diocese of Münster.
