Broich Castle
In the Broich district of Jülich stands Haus Broich, also known as Hallberg Castle, an aristocratic residence. The complex originated as a medieval motte and includes a baroque manor house surrounded by moats, the remains of its former outer bailey, an old economic building, and a garden and landscape park.
History+
The origins of Haus Broich date back to the Middle Ages, when it was built as a motte-and-bailey castle in a marshy area, indicated by the name “Broich” (wet meadow). The complex was first documented in the mid-14th century and was owned by the Mulart von Broich family, followed by the von Wachtendonk family in the 15th century. Changes of ownership characterized its history until the 18th century, including the von Quadt and von Siegen families. An event was the overnight stay of French King Louis XIV in May 1672 on his way to Neuss.
