Burgfey Manor

The Burgvey ruin is the remnant of a medieval castle tower on the western slope of the Veybach stream, about one kilometer east of Mechernich in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The castle was first mentioned in 1419 as a male fief. Probably a fortified house stood on this site even earlier, as silver coins from the mid-13th century were found there. The first feoffee was Arnold von Lutrait (Leuterath), known as Nechtersheim. He was a rather wealthy knight. From his son, the estate passed by inheritance to Johann von Büdesheim in 1481. In 1506, Eberhard von Büdesheim and his wife Anna Gürtzgen von Schwerfen were the owners. In 1574, the Count of Blankenheim confiscated the fief. In 1674, Count Salentin Ernst sold it to Johann Bertram von Nesselrode. From this time on, the building was no longer used and fell into disrepair. The ruin was most recently purchased by Dr. H. F. Callenberg.

The castle formerly consisted only of a residential tower with a curtain wall and outlying farm buildings.
