Darup Manor

The origins of Haus Darup date back to the High Middle Ages, with the manor house undergoing multiple renovations and extensions. Originally surrounded by a moat on four sides, the estate is still enclosed by a water-filled ditch on three sides. Families such as the von Droste zu Darup, von Raesfeld, von Galen, and von Plettenberg were among its former owners. In 1714, the house came into the possession of the Barons von Bönninghausen through marriage, who held it for 215 years. Clemens Maria Franz von Bönninghausen, a member of this family, established the first district administration of Coesfeld here in 1816.
