In Barlo, a district of Bocholt, lies the moated castle Haus Diepenbrock. The estate, whose name derives from the former swamp landscape, is surrounded by moats and a castle pond.

History+

The origins of Haus Diepenbrock date back to the 12th century, with a documented mention as a fortified house from 1326, then owned by the von Diepenbrock family. In 1520, the property passed through marriage to the Zeyne von Welfelde family, who expanded and rebuilt the castle over two centuries, losing its defensive character in favor of a residential castle. After the direct line of the von Welfelde family died out in 1717, Johann Anton Franz von Graes zu Loburg acquired the estate in 1732.
