Döring Castle

Haus Döring, an old "Burgmotte" (motte-and-bailey castle), represents the original form of all moated castles in Münsterland. Haus Döring was presumably built in the 12th century on a circular mound, which was surrounded by a double moat. The residential tower on this approximately 8 m high earthen cone thus offered the best conditions for a successful defense against enemies storming from the surrounding flat area due to its high position. The farm buildings with the mill were located in the so-called outer bailey and protected the main access to the hill castle. Today, a simple two-story Baroque building from 1727 stands on the hill, in whose cellars the remains of the medieval castle are still preserved. Despite all structural changes, the old structure of the ring complex with its ramparts has remained quite well preserved.
