Echthausen Castle

Haus Echthausen is a moated castle in Wickede-Echthausen. The property, which has been a protected monument since 1987, is not accessible to the public as it is privately owned.

Haus Echthausen was first mentioned in a document due to a legal dispute between Emperor Conrad II and Werden Abbey.

It once belonged to the Counts of Arnsberg, then until 1835 to the von Böckenförde gen. Schüngel family. Until 1909 it belonged to the Erbsälzer family von Lilien, who sold it in 1924 to Baron von Boeselager. In 1991, his descendants sold the heavily dilapidated property to the entrepreneurial Bente family, who extensively renovated all the buildings and the associated park and have used it as their residence ever since.

The cellar and ground floor in the western part of the house form the oldest building stock from 1530. The current, central part of the manor house was probably added between 1570 and 1620. In the 18th century, the building received an additional half-timbered floor. The last expansion took place with the addition of the east wing in 1910, accompanied by the redesign of windows and doors.

After a longer period of vacancy, the property was cleared for demolition at the end of the 20th century. A private investor bought and renovated it.
