Gartlage Manor

In Osnabrück is Haus Gartlage, a historic manor and estate house. Originally part of a noble estate, it is now a residential building.

The first documented mention of Gartlage as a possession of the Prince-Bishopric of Osnabrück dates to 1190. In the 14th century, a stone house existed on this site, of which only foundations remain today. The manor house visible today was built at the end of the 16th century. The Gartlage estate changed hands several times and suffered looting and fire damage by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. After 1675, it came into the possession of Nikolaus Eberhard von Snetlage zu Wulften, a canon of Hildesheim Cathedral, who donated it to the Gymnasium Carolinum in 1683. The manor served as a retreat for the Jesuits, who managed the gymnasium until 1773. Later, the house and its associated lands were leased out. A half-timbered house that once belonged to the estate, serving as an inn and later as a coffee house, was damaged in World War II and subsequently demolished.
